Early dogs of this breed featured strong muscle and very heavy bone. Their large head and upturned lower mandible used to be very helpful in bull-baiting and dog-fighting competitions. Those dogs were very aggressive and powerful, and they killed many bulls. Nowadays, they are but the most affectionate and amicable companions. They love human company, and they cannot do without our attention and care. They have thick skin, short hair, which requires little in the way of grooming, and wrinkly faces.

These dogs are very easy to identify by their extremely short face and massive, very broad, square and undershot jaws. High quality dos of this breed have very muscular and heavy shoulders. Their chest should be deep, full and broad. The body of this breed should be capacious, with well-rounded ribs and full sides. Bitches are more feminine and don’t bear the characteristics of the breed to the same degree as do the males.
