Fully created for a special purpose, these dogs are considered to be the acme of canine breeding. Though nowadays they don’t perform their original functions, their appearance remains exaggerated. Such appearance is not natural for a dog; human interference is evident from the first sight. With such a large head, short muzzle and massive body, these dogs would not have survived in the wild; they are highly dependable on their owners. General health of purebred dogs cannot be called excellent; most bloodlines are prone to genetic disorders. The average lifespan of these dogs is 7-8 years.

Modern dogs are not as wild and vicious, and they are mostly kept as pets. However, the American variety is very intelligent, self-assured and agile. It is more active than English and French types, and it has longer legs, which brings them closer to their predecessors. These dogs originated in old times, and their fathers were used for killing bulls. Those were Mastiff-type dogs, who had very strong jaws, flat muzzle and powerful body. Breeders developed these features throughout the entire history of bull baiting, which was banned in 1835.
