The first AKC standard for the breed was accepted in 1886. This breed is one of the few accepted by the AKC in the early days of its history. At that time, purebred dogs differed slightly in appearance from the present day version. Early dogs were not so exaggerated in conformation. Official recognition added to the popularity of the breed. Some breed fanciers believe that changes introduced by breeders since that time have virtually destroyed the breed, because such appearance often leads to difficulties with breathing, running and delivering puppies.
