There appeared new variants of this breed: American, French and Miniature. These dogs retain the tenacity and strength of the original breed, but differ in size, conformation and temperament. Show quality dogs of all breed varieties possess equitable disposition and pacific and dignified demeanor. Their appearance and attitude suggest vigor, stability and great strength. Males should be much larger and stronger than females. Females bear the characteristics of the breed to the lesser degree than males.

This breed has a long history and is a descendant of the ancient Mastiffs that were originated in Asia and were brought to Europe by Normans. The dogs of this breed were bred mainly to hunt lions and bears and bait bulls. These are strong and courageous animals that are good runners, jumpers and fighters. This very ability influenced the intention of the rich people who liked wild fight games to make a fighter out of that dog.
